AMANDA J. NORBUTUS is a professor of chemistry at Valencia College (Orlando, FL). As an educator, her work focuses on active learning, sustainability, and internationalizing the curriculum through the lens of chemistry. For example, using Napoleon to introduce the metric system or having students calculate electricity savings if they implement sustainable practice in their work or home life. Her research in cultural heritage analytical science involves the development of protective coatings for modern art and analysis of cultural heritage materials, particularly in relation to modern art, public mural conservation, as well as natural and artificial aging protocols. Norbutus has created a list of “best practices” of mural production, protection, and preservation for artists, conservators, and scientists, as well as introduced analytical research methods as a means of preventive conservation to muralists and mural programs.
