Have students find and review all materials in the handbook for second-language speakers. Then, in groups, ask them to expand these tips based on their own experiences with other languages as well as their experience with English: What tips do they have from studying other languages? What tips do ESL students in the class have to add?

Barclay Barrios is an Associate Professor of English and Director of Writing Programs at Florida Atlantic University, where he teaches freshman composition and graduate courses in composition methodology and theory, rhetorics of the world wide web, and composing digital identities. He was Director of Instructional Technology at Rutgers University and currently serves on the board of Pedagogy.
