Tara Cosco | Making a Difference for the Children in Mozambique

Tara Cosco shares what drives her to achieve more.
My Journey to #AchieveMore
What drives me to do more? I am continually motivated to do more by my desire to make a difference. I have wonderful stories of students who I believe I impacted over the past 19 years, but my greatest motivator is happening right now.
I am currently a professor at Milligan College in northeastern Tennessee. I prepare college students to become teachers. Milligan College is a Christian college and I chose Milligan because of its integration with faith and my desire to do missionary work. I have always wanted to travel to Africa and help the children there.
Recently, I Dr. Cindy Lang, education professor at Carson Newman University. Dr. Lang shared how education students at Carson Newman travel to Mozambique every other year and work at Hlauleka School. I immediately asked how I could get involved.
Dr. Lang and I continued to talk and now I have scheduled my first trip to Mozambique this summer to work in the Hlauleka School. There are seven of us traveling together this summer to visit the school. We will collaborate with teachers there, take school supplies, and share teaching strategies.
I have learned that the children in this school treasure paper and pencils because they do not normally have these supplies. When I discovered this fact, it broke my heart. I love writing and as a young girl, I wrote in a journal every day. I cannot imagine not having paper and pencil to express my thoughts and reflect on the events of my life. I plan to take as many supplies as my suitcase can hold. I also plan to help expand programs like this. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to make an impact on this world and lift up the lives of others.
