Gokhan Hacisalihoglu | Helping the World Achieve More by Improving Plant Life

My Journey to #AchieveMore
My desire to #AchieveMore was born of my interest in solving plant biology puzzles and my determination to make a big lasting impact. Reflecting on my journey, I can identify two factors that keep this passion alive: First, as a professor of biology and plant nutritional quality, my work has the potential to improve the world's food supply. I develop high-throughput phenotyping tools to uncover mechanisms underlying germination and plant growth traits under nutrient limitations. My research has direct outcomes for crop production; it can help reduce the use of chemicals in soils while increasing both the yield and quality of food plants. To date, I've authored 39 publications and two books. In 2018, I was selected as a Fulbright Specialist and look forward to working with faculty and staff abroad to address critical food crop issues. Second, I am motivated by the importance and value of my teaching. I have always believed that it is my responsibility as a scientist to continue learning and to share my expertise, so that our societal knowledge bank can grow. My passion for training the next generation is evident: I have taught freshman biology to over 6,400 students so far. Because freshman biology has the potential to inspire students to pursue a career in science, I try to make it fun and relevant. At my current university, the largest historically black college in the nation, I implemented a "flipped" biology course, adopting student-centered approaches such as collaborative work, concept mapping, case studies, and minute papers. In combining active learning with the flipped classroom, I enhance students' attitudes toward biology and their academic results. By blazing a trail in plant nutritional physiology and unlocking students' potential in STEM, I hope to create a better, more sustainable world. This is what drives me to #AchieveMore.
