Opinion Barometer Activity
Assignment by Allison Dziuba., Bedford New Scholar 2020
Activity
Clear desks so that there’s space in the middle of the classroom (can also be done outside). Place “Agree” and “Disagree” Post-It notes on opposite sides of the space.
Students form a line; the instructor reads statements and students move along the Agree-Disagree continuum. The instructor asks students to explain their positions, and others can move to change their minds.
Here are some possible statements:
- College is the best time in one’s life.
- College tuition should be free to everyone.
- University of California tuition should be free to all California residents.
- Instead of letter grades, students’ work should be evaluated through a written report provided by the instructor at the end of the course.
- College students should not be required to take composition courses.
- The main purpose of a college education is to prepare students for their future careers.
- High school writing assignments and assessments have prepared me well for college writing.
- College students can motivate and enact social change.
Discussion
Debrief discussion prompts:
- Why did we do this?
- What did you observe or learn?
- How have your opinions been shaped by personal experience, the experiences of friends and family, and media you’ve encountered (e.g., books, print or TV news, films, blogs, YouTube videos)?
