Class Activity: Managing Distractions

Divide students into small groups of three or four. Within each group, assign roles. One will play the role of a student trying to study. The others should provide potential distractions—a roommate who wants to chat, a friend who stops by and invites the student to go out, an old friend calling on the phone, etc. As a group, these students should work together to create a skit illustrating how the beleaguered student could gracefully (but firmly!) remove themselves from potentially distracting situations. Have each group perform their skit for the entire class. Then ask the class to critique each group’s skit.
